Castro Statement on President’s Decision to Cancel North Korea Summit
Washington, D.C.—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today released the following statement in response to the President’s decision to cancel the North Korea summit:
“Once again, things have fallen apart with North Korea. However, the idea that President Trump would cancel a historic summit over someone else’s strong language is absurd. With three weeks to go, the President and his team were unprepared—plain and simple.
“This is not an excuse to give up on diplomacy. Secretary Pompeo must take advantage of the rapport he has built with Kim Jong Un and maintain the diplomatic opening that has developed since March and work with our allies abroad on next steps forward. A sustained dialogue, led by Secretary of State Pompeo and enabled by a Senate-confirmed Ambassador to South Korea and a Special Representative for North Korea Policy in concert with the international community, can lay the groundwork for a successful summit in the future.”
